How should randomized trials be done? The example of remdesivir for COVID-19

This week I POSTED comments regarding the NIH study on remdesivir for COVID-19. The post was spurred by a question from a person who was concerned about the study’s accuracy and worried that she may have to face a decision to accept the drug should she get ill. Several readers, after the post, asked how randomized trials should be done. That is a big topic, but this video starts the conversation. Again, I use the remdesivir study as a test case. I also link to a commentary regarding stopping trials earlier than planned for. Stopping a trial early may overestimate benefit. The more we know about how to best study medical interventions for our care, the better off we will be at knowing what to believe.
